Grief is a hard thing to cope with and we all do it differently. But sometimes I worry about Whitney Houston’s family. First there was that of a reality series featuring many family memebers, now Cissy Houston has announced plans to write a book. According to The Hollywood Reporter the late singer’s mother has signed a deal with Harper Collins—and it’s coming out next February (for those of you who don’t that’s a quick turnaround in the world of books). That means it will hit the shelves (or our Kindle’s) about a year after the singer died. Is that…
It’s almost been two months since the world lost Whitney Houston and most of us still think it’s nothing short of surreal. That’s why yesterday’s release of the trailer for “Sparkle” is like a little light breaking through the clouds. It gives us a glimpse of the hope that she had for herself. Initially, I approached this remake of one of my favorite flicks with some trepidation. Okay, Irene Cara and company weren’t knocking down the Academy’s doors but it has entertained generations of young black girls with its combination of love and loss. It’s a part of my childhood and…
Okay I am going to admit that I am truly torn about this (and I almost didn’t write about it). I mean I am still not quite over Whitney’s sudden death yet. Her funeral is this coming Saturday and Fox is already talking about what they are doing about the “Waiting to Exhale” sequel. According to Vulture.com the studio is moving forward with the sequel. Elizabeth Gabler, president of Fox 2000, even mused about who might replace Houston and Oprah’s name came up. Okay, with all due respect, NO!
When I read “Getting to Happy” I openly wept in the…
Update: I wrote this piece one day before I learned of Whitney’s passing. I was so hopeful. I thought about taking this post down but decided to leave it up as we mourn her and what could have been….
Everybody loves a comeback and most of us have been hoping that Whitney Houston does just that. After a rocky road back a years back I was looking forward to her role in the reboot of one of my favorite films “Sparkle”. But that won’t come out until next summer. Now comes word from The Hollywood Reporter that Houston may have…
I decided to skip yesterday’s televised Grammy Nominations concert last night. To me it seems like yet another way to drag out awards season. And the Los Angeles Times’ Ann Powers pretty much assures me that I didn’t miss anything except an amazing Maxwell performance of Michael Jackson’s “The Lady in My Life” (which I will be watching on YouTube as soon as it’s available) Anyway, the nominations were dominated by the same two women we’ve been watching on music award shows for the past few months, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift with 10 and 8 nods respectively (and…
So, today’s the day Whitney Houston gets to see how the public really feels about her comeback. Her new CD I Look To You ($12.98) hits store shelves today. (I’m sure some of her diehard fans took advantage of the pre-order deals by QVC and others.) Although its clear that Clive Davis and company were hoping to find another “I Will Always Love You” since they stacked the deck with ballads, her faster tracks like “Million Dollar Bill” are the ones that make me smile. I think it’s gutsy that she redid the Donny Hathaway hit, ”A Song For You”,…
Embedded video from CNN Video So Whitney Houston’s album release has been moved up to August 31st to make her eligible for Grammy consideration. In this interview, she gives her reasons why she needed to take a break.
Okay so this week is becoming one of ‘official’ comebacks. A few days ago the Sade return was confirmed and now Arista has announced that Whitney Houston’s long-awaited CD has a release date of September 1st. While I join Whitney’s fans with a chorus of Yays, I can’t help wondering if the embattled diva is ready to be back in the spotlight. (more…)
We already know that Hollywood is good at recycling ideas and sometimes that’s a good thing. But other times, a bad remake can have you shaking your head in disbelief. Here’s a list of remakes that worked and other that didn’t translate the formula so well the second time around.
