We all know that Detroit, the Motor City, has become Bizarro Land. How else can we explain the fact that Kwame Kirkpatrick remains in office and a child had to call Monica Conyers, wife of Senator John Conyers, and president pro tem of the City Council on her bad behavior?
Now, 13-year-old Keiara Bell has become famous for calling Conyers on her mess. Today, the Wall Street Journal had her story on page 1 (yes page 1, even though it was below the fold that’s still big) almost a month after she chastised Conyers. And the You Tube video of their exchange continues to garner interest (click below).
In case you are unfamiliar with the story, Kieiara had to remind Conyers that she is an adult who has to both know her boundaries and make appropriate choices. That means you can’t say to a co-worker, “You ain’t my Daddy…” and things of a similar vein. Or call them Shrek and think that’s a good thing. I don’t know any sister with a professional post who would consider going there in the first place, but again this is Detroit. And clearly, after it was over, Conyers didn’t think there wasn’t anything wrong with her behavior. She said she just gets frustrated and was emotional. (I wonder whether her husband is aware enough to be embarassed for her).
Whether she wants to or not, Conyers is learning a big lesson. Her actions live on long after these incidences. Could you imagine through some fluke, this woman as the next mayor of Detroit? But this whole saga should serve as a shining example to Conyers, as well as all sisters who let their mouths start moving before they let their brains kick in. You’ve got to realize that for good or for bad, someone is always watching you. But the saddest thing of all to me is that even children recognize it when we act the fool. So even if you aren’t in government please watch what you say and do.
