One of the perks of my day job is I get to see some amazing Black folks–especially sisters. And yesterday was one of those days. The uber-talented, soulful sister Ledisi came by to discuss her new book “Better Than Alright”, which she did in partnership with Essence. It hits stores today and it is a deeper portrait of this very real songstress.
Her journey has not been a Crystal Staircase but she has made it to the top her way. And it is her faith that has kept her through it all. The book is a hybrid of affirmations, photos and personal reflections that allows the reader to contribute thoughts of her own.So it’s more than a book it’s a keepsake.
What struck me was how candid this sister was about her challenges. One of them: to affirm her beauty. Her mother told her she was beautiful but the record industry and the world at large had other ideas But she knew the truth and didn’t let anyone tell her otherwise.
This is just the beginning of what I am going to call Ledisi’s Brilliant Year. After hitting NYC, Philly, Baltimore/DC and TX, she headline at the Essence Music Festival and then headline her own Fall tour featuring Eric Benet. They’ll hit 26 cities.
In this age of manufactured fame it is so fabulous to see a deserving talent start to get her due. Ledisi is about to soar ready the world is ready or not.
