Gladys Knight Joins DWTS (And I Wonder Why…)

There’s no doubt that “Dancing With the Stars” can be a boost to a person’s career–especially those sisters who have spent time away from the spotlight. And although I am not a regular viewer I do know that the show did get us talking about Mya, Toni Braxton, Brandy and for a time Lil Kim when they were on their respective seasons. But does an icon need “Dancing With the Stars” as much as R&B, pop and rap princesses? I mean seriously folks we’re talking Motown legend here? That’s the question that ran through my mind when I heard that the legendary Gladys Knight would be joining the dance competition along with Jaleel White (aka Urkel) and Sherri Shepherd among others. The two latter ‘stars’ have comedic routes so I think they’re doing it for the sheer fun of the experience. In other words we wouldn’t care if they feel flat on their faces and would be pleasantly surprised if they did well. But Ms. Knight? Who wants to see her reputation tarnished? Not me.

So this begs the quesion: Why is Ms. Knight going to rumba, foxtrot, paso doble, tango and waltz? Money is an awfully good reason of course and if that’s her motivation then well, okay. Relevancy is another good reason–person Ms. Knight wants to resonate with the 18-25 demographic or something like that. Seems like a reach, no? Probably so. Either way, I think she could have done another extended run in Las Vegas. I heard her show was phenomenal at the Flamingo some years back–and frankly Celine Dion has pulled in some big bucks as a diva in residence. And this time I’d buy a ticket because we all know by now that we have to appreciate our legends while they’re with us.

Honestly, I would rather have seen her take up residence as a judge on “The X Factor” or some singing competition show where her well-known talent could be better appreciated. Instead, I need to hope that Ms. Knight has more steps up her sleeves than those moves she used to do with The Pips so she can stay around for weeks. I won’t be watching but I will be praying.
