Aretha Franklin: Should the Queen of Soul Judge “American Idol”?

The singing competition show “American Idol” was once a ratings juggernaut but the bloom seems to be off the rose. Between other singing shows like “X Factor” and “The Voice” as well as judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler running for the hills, it doesn’t seem like a good time to be part of the show. But it looks like the Queen of Soul wouldn’t mind. According to TMZ.com, Aretha Franklin is still interested in being a judge, even now. it could be an interesting choice, however, I don’t know how I feel about it. On one hand, Franklin is a legend and arguably knows music. But on the other hand, I am afraid even her star power may not be able to bring the show back to its former prominence. And I would hate to see her associated with a sinking ship.

Right now, Randy Jackson is the last man standing at “AI” and the viability of the show will largely depend upon who else will be sitting at the judge’s table. But I also wonder whether the format has gotten stale. I must confess I stopped watching “Idol” years ago for a myriad of reasons and right now “The Voice” seems fresher. (I’ve never watched “X Factor” so I can’t compare it) but perhaps a fresh, smartly chosen infusion of judges could change all that. I hope that the Queen thinks twice before she says yes to an potential offer.

How about you: Do you want to the Queen of Soul as an “American Idol” judge?
