I just turned to The View, which is live from Las Vegas and I was immediately struck by Whoopi Goldberg’s outfit. How can I describe it? Long loose top over baggy shorts with a her locks cascading out of a sun visor and sneakers. It makes me think that she was in a hurry this morning because her proportions were way off making her look like a blob of fabric with legs sticking out. But on second thought, I believe she is making her own kind of fashion statement. Or should I say anti-fashion statement?
Whoopi has never been a fashion icon. When she burst on the scene on Broadway back in the day with her one-woman show, she stood out because she was wearing a button-down and some khakis (or something like that). I will admit that comics can get away with a lot but when you are in front of an audience five days a week shouldn’t you try to find a way to be yourself but a little more pulled together? Ellen DeGeneres certainly has by sticking with her pant suit sneaker combination.
In her role as moderator on The View she is supposed to be the voice of reason and keep things moving. But this laissez faire approach to her appearance actually distracts from the discussion, especially when everyone else shows up dressed for work. Does she think looking too good would make what she is talking about less important? Or does she simply not care?
Whatever the reason, she abandoned her “I just rolled out of bed” look last week when she hosted the Tony Awards. By dressing up, it sent the message that she took the role of MC seriously. I may not have liked her choice of outfit (too much going on) but overall it was a marked improvement from her daily look. So Whoopi this begs the question, would it be so hard to step up your appearance for your day job? Today was an all time low.
